Sliding glass doors let sunlight get into your room, and gives easy access to the patio or backyard. These are the key reasons why most homeowners install them. Installing them is most efficient in the area where a large front door is removed. Doing it yourself, you can install them within a few hours with some expert help as the glass doors are quite heavy and awkward to carry and move.
A DIY installation process of sliding glass doors is quite easy. It saves you the money you may need to spend on professional installation. While replacing the old sliding door with a new one, you will first-of-all need to remove the old door. Before installing the new door you will have to cut out the opening. Doing it yourself, you will need to follow the right steps. But, if you think you are not experienced enough to carry on the task it is advisable to take help of a professional sliding glass door installer. Step #1: Cut Away the Old Door Cut away the exposed sliding door. To do the task you will need to have a utility knife. From side to side, cut out the caulk and paint holding the moldings applied around the openings in place. Once you have successfully removed the caulk, pull the interior trim out from the wall with the help of pry bar. You should be quite slow and gentle when using the pry bar to deal with any paint, glue, or caulk that is still present. Your wall still may have staples at the top to the side pieces of trim. Repeat the same steps carefully on the exterior trim. Remove the door from its place. While removing the door hold each section for it tightly with both hands. Pull it straight up out of the track and take it out of the frame by pulling it back out. The doors are always heavy to hold. Each section of it may weigh approx 100 pounds. You should remove them sequentially one after the other. After removing the trim take off all nails left behind the door frame holding it in its place firmly. With the help of a screwdriver, remove all screws which appear to be there on your sliding door to the wooden door frame through all four sides of it. Step #2: Shop a New Sliding Glass Door While shopping for a sliding door, it is crucially important to know the exact size of the gap your new door needs to fill. Take a measuring tape and note down the exact length and width of the opening. Measure each side of the opening properly. Now since you have measured the opening, it's time to purchase the door. Get down at any reputable sliding glass barn door hardware store. Browse the wide range of glass doors available. Make sure you have measured the glass doors to confirm that the size you have chosen will fit within the opening perfectly. Step #3: Install the New Sliding Glass Door The opening you have removed the old door from may still be rough and cluttered. Get rid of the entire torn material and leftover nails. All the four sides of the opening frame area should be nicely leveled. If they aren't, level them out with the help of a shim. If you find the opening frame is slightly large than the glass door you have bought, you can adjust the opening size by nailing one or more 1x3 plywood strips. The second step to take here will be to apply the flashing to the frame. Flashing is available to purchase at any home supply or sliding glass door hardware store. It is a sort of waterproof tape that is used to protect not only the door frame but also the lower edges of the sliding door from water damage. Fleshing us used to prevent water from passing by the edges. Conjoining the bottom sill put on a layer of flashing on the doorframe. Also, spread over approx a 15 cm (6 inches) single layer of flashing up on both sides of the doorjamb. Now, once you have applied a layer of flashing, set the glass door frame in its place. Door frames are not easy to carry. It is advisable to find out help while lifting and carrying the glass door frame inside your house and place it into the large opening position. Remember, you are not supposed to install the door in the backward position. The small track side of the sliding screen should always face outwards. Screw tight the door frame through the material of the new glass door frame. Tighten the screws until they are embedded tightly in the door frame. You can use the same screws you have detached from all four sides of the old door frame if they are still in the useable condition. Keep measuring the level to ensure that the frame you have installed is straight on all sides. If you see any gapes on the frame stuff one or more shits of fiberglass insulation into the gaps. Now clean all debris out from the slides to get a perfect fit. Then lift the first section of the glass door; of course, take someone's help. Place the bottom portion in place on the door frame track, and now press the upper portion of the glass door in its place too. The same way install the second section of the sliding glass door. Once the door is securely attached in its respective place, fix the interior and exterior trim in its place. Nail them in the same locations from where you removed them right at the beginning. Once the trim is nailed the door frame sides or studs will not be visible. And here comes the final stage of applying the screen. Snap the screen on the running track from top to bottom. Make sure that the slides are easy and smooth to open and shut. Tips Warm and moderately good weather is the right time to start and complete the sliding door installation process. Once you have exposed sliding door tracks, there will be a large opening in your house wall. So, the weather should not be rainy or unpleasantly cold. In addition, you may not be the right person to manage everything successfully. There is nothing bad to ask someone in your family or friends for some help or hire a professional sliding door installer before it is too late. Hiring a professional at the very initial stage will help you save a lot of money that you may unknowingly spend out while researching, testing, and trying out the process. Related Article:
